Norwegians making lime bast rope by hand. Fascinating.

This stuff has been found in Viking burials dating back to the 800's.   Tough stuff!

  2. Interesting, do they soak it in fresh water or salt water?

    1. It's salt water from the nearby fjord, and it's in there for three to four months.

  3. If interested, the Lime tree referenced is not the citrus tree: limewood is the European for Linden. Woven bast was used by Russian serfs to make footware, and the stones of Stonehenge were dragged into place with bast ropes. This technology is at least 10,000 years old.
