Ready to go

  1. I used to have one of those old army canteens, but don't know what happened to it. My hawk is a lighter "squaw ax" and my revolver an 1860, rather than a '58.

    1. With a cap and ball revolver, you seal the chamber mouths with grease to keep a chain fire from happening. Or that was what I was told years ago when I started shooting them. Looks like this guy might have used Crisco. That was the cheap material to use. Using petroleum based products with black powder is a mess waiting to happen.

    2. X2. I own a dragoon that I fire. I bought it in 1980 so that's thirty eight years now of shooting. Chris called it right.

  4. Ruger Old Army cap n' ball. Had one, sold it, got another in stainless, still have it. Have set it up to load and shoot 255 gr. Keith style 45 Colt bullet.

The nice thing about aluminum canteens is that you can heat water in them.

  6. My parents bought me the Ruger Old Army back in the 70's if I recall correctly. Loads of fun to shoot with real black powder but I never loaded more than one chamber when using that instead of Pyrodex. Enough smoke to cure half a hog. Still have it locked up in the safe bit I have the itch. Everything is so different now with premeasured loads etc.
