Republic XF-12 Rainbow

    1. According to Wikipedia (the source of all verified knowledge!), it was designed to be a recce aircraft. Had it been built a few years earlier, it would probably been very effective in that role.

  2. F was the designation for recce aircraft. The recce version of the P-38 was designated both F-4 and F-5.

    1. Right. AAC/AAF used "P" for fighters (Pursuit) and F for Photo Recon.
      Funny, though, I was just looking at a model of the Rainbow...
