High voltage undersea cables, in cross section.


  • Two concentric rows of silver dots are steel armoring cables.
  • The very thin layer directly below the armor is a copper shield
  • The solid black mass is a plastic filler for structural support.
Inside that filler you have 4 independent cables. There are 3 high voltage conductors for 3 phase power. Those layers:
  • Thin White - Jacket/conductor screen
  • Black - Outer semiconductor
  • Thick White - XLPE electrical insulation
  • Black - Inner semiconductor
  • Center - Copper power conductor
The 4th small cable in the upper left is probably an armored fiber optic line. Used for transmitting information needed to operate the circuit and monitor the cable integrity.

    1. would really cost less if you used 1" silver buss bars. that cable is way pricey.
      I used to work on and older aircraft with honking great powerful search radar which used about five thousand pounds of silver wiring throughout. the weapon system unit cost was seventy nine million 1954 dollars per aircraft. never ever had an issue of any sort with the silver wiring. coax cable and wave guide dielectric gas was a different story.
      i think a real treat would be to see how that cable is spliced. or do they manufacture it in one continuous length for each specific routing?? that would be my guess
